What we do

About Brigaders

Like school, girls are grouped into sections according to their age on 1st July and girls aged 14-18 can join the GB Brigader Section.  This is the most senior section in GB.  Brigaders get a say in choosing what they want to do at GB.  Lifelong friends are made in GB, which gives girls an opportunity to chat about their concerns with friends and leaders who are care about them.  GB is a safe place for girls to be girls with no pressure on looks, ability, background etc.

Activities may differ from company to company but here's the kind of things many Brigaders get involved in at GB:
  • Discover the relevance of God and His Word, the Bible, through modern, relevant and interactive Bible teaching.

  • Hanging out with friends away from social media, exams, coursework and boys.

  • Develop leadership skills - help out with the younger sections.

  • Body image issues, developing self-esteem and learning about keeping fit, healthy eating and feeling good.

  • Camp and outdoor pursuits, including The Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

  • Environmental projects, community service, and local/overseas missions.

  • Practical life skills i.e. DIY, first aid, cooking, car maintenance etc.

  • Arts and crafts.

  • Volleyball, football, netball, badminton, unihoc, swimming, running, gymnastics etc.

  • Modern dance, drama, and performance skills.

Brigader Uniform

In Girls' Brigade, we wear uniform because it enables equality and promotes a sense of belonging - all the girls look the same irrespective of their backgrounds.

All items of uniform may be purchased from the GBNI Shop. Uniform can also be ordered from our Shop.

Awards

Like the Seniors, the Brigader Programme is also based on the ‘PSALT File’ and is centred on the achievement of the Brigader Brooch. This is the highest company award a girl can achieve and is awarded to those who gain 40 points from the Brigader Programme over a minimum three-year period.

Points towards this Award are gained in four stages (ten points for each stage). A coloured Triangle Award is presented on completion of each of the first three stages. The Brigader Brooch is awarded on completion of the fourth stage.

Queen's Award

The Girls' Brigade Queen's Award is the highest Award a girl may gain during her years in the Girls' Brigade.

The Award aims to encourage girls and young women to a personal commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ, while respecting other faiths; inspiring them to greater endeavour in service within the general community and to make a contribution to the worldwide concept of The Girls' Brigade. To date, over 1300 girls from more than 190 GBNI companies have achieved their Queen’s Award.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award

The DofE is a life-changing adventure for young people aged 14-24 and is a great opportunity for young people to develop skills for their future life and work.

Young people can take part in the Award at three levels: Bronze, Silver or Gold. Participants achieve an Award by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections (five if going for Gold).

GBNI Youth Forum

GBNI is committed to delivering effective, inclusive youth work and recognises the way to do this is through youth-led decision-making. For young women aged 16 - 25.

Mentoring

‘WALK WITH ME’ is a resource that has been developed by a range of Irish denominations and youth ministries. Working in tandem with one another, they have created a resource that will encourage deep inter-generational relationships which are anchored in Scripture, prayer and growth. By creating these mentoring relationships, we hope that we will be helping our girls to step closer to Jesus and equipping them to Seek, Serve and Follow Christ further.

This resource will enable our GB companies to support our girls, aged 14+, by meeting in ones or twos with a committed Christian (a mentor) for an hour every couple of weeks to catch up, discuss the Bible and pray.

Develop further in GB

Once you reach the final years of being a GB girl as a Brigader, GB life does not need to end. There are plenty of opportunities for you to consider to continue your involvement in your local GB company.

What are the policies around safeguarding at GBNI?

Blue plus icon

GBNI is committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all its members to participate in a relaxed and secure atmosphere.

GBNI and the local church train volunteers and Staff on safeguarding issues and share information about good practice on an ongoing basis, ensuring that volunteers and Staff are clear about what steps to take when concerns arise regarding the safety of children, young people, and adults at risk of harm.

GBNI works with local churches to ensure that good, safe procedures are in place in its GB companies and that sound recruitment procedures are in place.  We also work in partnership with parents/carers and/or other professionals to protect children/young people and adults at risk of harm.  All volunteers and Staff (if appropriate) in GBNI must be thoroughly vetted via AccessNI for their roles within the organisation.

GBNI collaborates with its volunteers and Staff to minimise the risks to children and young people by sharing information and issuing guidance on safe practices. For a full list of our current policies and procedures and downloadable information leaflets for parents, visit the Our Policies page on this site.

If you would like to report a concern, you can speak directly with your Church's Designated Child Protection Officer or contact our GBNI Designated Child Protection Officer by calling 028 9454 8054.

What uniform will my child need?

The girls wear a distinctive uniform that promotes a sense of belonging, equality, and identity. Each section in GB has its own uniform. All uniform items can be purchased from our GB shop at GBHQ or ordered online. Provision for uniforms varies from company to company, as some companies operate a uniform swapping system or sell second-hand items for a nominal charge. Go to the relevant section page and view the official uniform required for girls in that section.
