Re:Charge - Week 3

Summer is well and truly underway… Instagram is flooded with beach trips, ice cream dates, picnics and holiday pictures.  Summer is a great time to unwind and enjoy a more relaxed way of life, as deadlines have been met, school/uni has wrapped up, and we can use our holidays from work.  Summer can also be a great time to take a break and a recharge of our spiritual life.

It can be easy to be trapped in a mundane routine during the year, between working, studying, trying to keep up with friends, GB, extra-curriculars and everything else that busies our lives.  This is why Summer is so great - we get a break from many of these things and can enjoy some more free time.  For me, the extra hours of sunlight make such a difference and I feel like I have so much more time in the day to get things done. This includes listening to podcasts, catching up on reading, and finding new devotional plans to follow.

It can be useful to create new habits during summer that we can commit to before starting back to school, college or uni in September. For me this means establishing what time of day I want to spend in my quiet time.

Some good habits we can start in summer are:
  1. Find new Christian podcasts to subscribe to, so I can follow them and find time to listen to them on my daily walks.
  2. Add new worship songs to my playlist
  3. Begin a new devotional book
  4. Catch up on my summer reading
  5. Start a new book of the bible to study
  6. Catch up & enjoy fellowship with friends
  7. Get involved with summer ministry in church

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”
~ 2 Timothy 1:7

God has created us to have a spirit of self-discipline, meaning that although sometimes it seems hard to start good habits, we are designed to be able to do this.  We can ask God to help us to commit to our goals, and through Him we can continue our good intentions we have started in Summer.

Another great thing this summer has been having time out from Girls Brigade to come up with new ideas for next year.  Last year of GB was intense, with COVID guidelines, new girls following lockdown and getting back into the swing of juggling preparation with a busy life.  I’ve enjoyed the time off and now I am looking forward to starting back in September and beginning new badgework and starting into the new scripture course with my Seniors.

Summer is a great way to restart the GB year refreshed and renewed, with our hearts set on the main reason for GB: sharing the gospel with young women, and helping them Seek, Serve & Follow Christ.

So rather than putting things off until after summer when you are back in a routine seize the opportunity of Summer to create new habits and further your relationship with God. By planting a good foundation in these things, it will be easier to commit to these for the rest of the year.
